Few sights in Costa Rica’s cloud forest are as striking as a Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno) perched among moss-covered branches. The male’s iridescent green plumage, crimson breast, and long, flowing upper-tail coverts make it one of the most captivating subjects in wildlife photography.
WHY SAN GERARDO DE DOTA?
Nestled in the Talamanca Mountains, the Savegre Valley combines lush cloud forest, wild fruiting trees, and remarkable opportunities to encounter quetzals in their natural habitat. Based on our experience as local guides, we consider San Gerardo de Dota the best place in the world to see and photograph wild Resplendent Quetzals.
National Geographic also featured San Gerardo de Dota in a May 2026 travel article, highlighting its cloud forests and resident quetzal population:
IS THERE A QUETZAL SEASON IN COSTA RICA?
In San Gerardo de Dota, quetzals can be found throughout the year. Their visibility and movements change with the availability of wild avocados and their breeding cycle, so photographic opportunities vary from month to month. There is no single short season in which visitors must come to look for them—but, as with all wild birds, sightings and specific photographs can never be guaranteed.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO PHOTOGRAPH QUETZALS?
Early morning is often particularly rewarding, especially around first light when the birds may be actively feeding. However, they can also be seen later in the day. Mist, changing light, and dense vegetation make patience and flexibility essential. A telephoto lens and protection from moisture are useful, but knowing the birds’ recent activity can matter just as much as your camera equipment.
A PHOTOGRAPHY EXPERIENCE GUIDED BY LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
At Your Quetzal Guide, we use recent sightings, the location of fruiting trees, and our understanding of quetzal behavior to choose promising observation spots. We look for natural photographic opportunities while considering light, distance, and background. We keep a respectful distance, avoid flash, and never disturb nesting birds for the sake of a photograph.
Our aim is not to stage the perfect image, but to help you capture an authentic moment in the life of a wild quetzal.
